My Child is a first year FIS athlete, now what?

The world seems to change and many questions come up when your child becomes a first year U18 and a FIS athlete. Hopefully this will help during that transition. Please remember that this is a guide and for detailed information regarding your athletes FIS participation and schedule you will need to contact your coach.

First item when becoming a FIS athlete is to make sure that the athlete has both a USSA/Far West membership and a FIS membership. All memberships can be taken care of at one time through the membership department at USSA. FIS memberships must be completed by August 15th in order to be on time, a USSA and Divisional membership are also required. Please contact membership@ussa.org.

Qualifying for races/Selection Boards:
Registration for USSA/Far West races remains the same. For FIS events athletes must qualify in order to particpate in these events. Qualifications are based on the current USSA points list. The points list that will be used to create selection boards for each event are listed on the 'standings and selections' page, under the competition tab on the Far West website. These selection boards open approximately 3 weeks prior to an event. This listing will also tell you how many men and women are being selected to that event, and what date the selections will be posted. An email will go out to the Srs-U18 hotline, and a posting will be made on the homepage of the Far West website to inform all that the selection boards are open. Athletes have 72 hours to respond to an open selections board. Selections continue down the atlernate list until all selection spots have been filled. Many times alternate spots will become filled close to the the event date.

Registering for a FIS event:
Once selections have been made an athlete will have 72 hours to respond to the Far West office if they 'will' or 'will not' be filling that selection/alternate spot, and with all registration paperwork. The website will inform the FIS athletes if they can register for the FIS event by fax/email/online registraiton. No athlete can register directly with the race organizer for a FIS event. All selected and alternate athletes that respond with a yes must send in their registration pages to the Far West office within that 72 hour time period.

Different tiers of FIS races:
There are three tiers of FIS racing that the Far West helps select athletes for.
*Elite FIS series is the top tier of FIS racing in the Western Region. Invitations are open to Automatics plus the Far West Divisional quota.
*The WR FIS series is the 2nd level of FIS racing in the Western Region. Invitations are open to the Far West Divisional Quota.
*The Divisional/Open FIS and Devo FIS races are open to a larger quota. Divisional FIS(WR JR Champs qualifiers) are within Far West.

What is an automatic?:
Each year the Western Region selects 40 men and 40 women as automatics for the Western Region FIS Series. Selection criteria is listed in the Western Region manual on their website: www.ussawest.com Once an athlete is on the Automatics list they cannot drop off the list for the season, and more athletes can become automatics if their points drop below the cutoff set by Western Region.

What is Western Region?:
Western Region is one of three USSA regions and is responsible for the regulation of the Alpine Ski Competition within the geographical area of the Western United States. It consists of the five Western Divisions: Alaska, Far West, Intermountain(IMD), Northern and Pacific Northwest(PNSA).

How to apply for an Out of Division USSA race

No one (competitor, coach, parent, legal guardian) may enter an athlete in a race in another division/region without prior approval from the Far West office. The philosophy of the Far West is to discourage unnecessary out-of-division travel. The following policy will apply:
  1. All requests must be made by the athlete’s parent or coach, or the athlete if he/she is 18 or older
  2. All requests must be submitted to the Far West office, in writing, at least three weeks (21 days) prior to the race
  3. Racers must meet all qualifications of the host division/region
  4. Out-of-Division races will only be considered when the Far West is not sponsoring a race of equal caliber, at or about the same time
  5. Exceptions may be applied for through the FWS office and will be considered by the FWS ACC
  6. If a request is granted, entries and fees must be submitted to the race organizer before the established deadline
