Snow King Elite FIS Tech Series & J2 National Qualifier

With this top series just ended, Far West had a number of top results. Here’s how it went:

THE WOMEN. It didn’t take long for Far West J2 Superstar and SBST athlete Foreste Peterson to let everyone in the Wyoming house know she came to play, along with a host of her teammates. She won the opener, GS, with SBST’s Jackie Lebel just behind in 3rd, Mammoth’s Emily James 6th, 1st year J2 SVST Lena Andrews 16th, DPST’s Lila Lipanja moving up from 74th to 17th, SVST’s Melissa Daniels 20th, Sonia Giacomazzi 21st and SVST’s 1st year J2, Tenaya Driller, 25th. In the 2nd GS, it was Peterson leading Far West again, 5th, followed by Lebel in 6th, James 8th, Andrews 15th, Noah Duff 19th and Lipanja 30th.

In the SL, it was Lebel hanging on after a huge DNF list, 6th, followed by James in 9th, Shannon Conroy 10th, Lapanja 13th, Morganne Murphy 22nd and Kelsey Higgins 28th. In the final event of the series, SL #2, it was Peterson with her 3rd top finish in four days, 5th, followed by Conroy in 15th, Duff in 25th, Higgins 27th, Murphy 28th, Amie Lonza 29th and Paige Whistler 30th.

THE MEN. Day 1, GS #1, and SBST and Dave van Ruiten Scholarship Winner Mark Engel lays down the first of four very impressive results, 5th, followed by SVST’s Bryce Bennett in 9th and SBST’s Jake Scannell in 25th. GS #2, it’s Engel again heading up a strong FW team, 9th, followed by SBST’s Jake Perkins in 15th, Bennett 20th, Corey Talbott 28th and Brent Talbot 29th.

In the SL, Bennett scores FW’s 1st podium, 3rd, with Engel 7th, Robbie Souza 11th, Dylan Brooks 15th, Scannell 18th, SVST’s 1st year J2 Kenny Wilson in 20th to lead the J2s, Bryce Eller in 21st, 2nd J2, James Clifford in 23rd, Troy Cohee 25th, 3rd J2, 1st year J2 Dylan Murtha 26th and J2 Brian Tidd 28th. In the SL, Engel saves the best for last, goes podium at #3, followed by Perkins in 13th, Scannell 20th, Brooks 21st, Miles Brazil 24th and Wilson leading the J2s, 29th.

That concludes the J2 Western Region Qualifying for the J2 Nationals. Coming up more results this week for the J4/5s, J3 GS JOQ from Alpine Meadows.

IMPACT Testing

Recently, you may have noticed that the newspapers and television have been full of stories regarding sports related concussions.  This focus is directly related to the fact that the medical management of sports-related concussion is rapidly evolving and has resulted in an increased level of safety for athletes at all levels of competition.   Consequently, concussion management has become an integral part of professional, university and high school programs nationally and internationally.  The NFL, Major League Baseball and The U.S. Ski Team have adopted concussion management programs utilizing IMPACT baseline cognitive testing.  Since the safety of our skiers has always been a primary consideration, Far West Skiing will be implementing a concussion awareness program.              In order to achieve this goal, Far West Skiing is developing procedures that will effectively and consistently manage any of our skiers who are diagnosed with concussion.  This concussion management program will also help in insuring that our concussed skiers are identified, treated and referred appropriately, receive appropriate follow-up medical care and that the athlete is fully recovered prior to returning to activity.              The basic procedure is as follows:1.      Far West Athletes will take a 20-30 minute computer-based cognitive test (IMPACT) that will establish baseline levels for thinking processes, such as attention, processing speed and memory that are typically negatively impacted in a concussion.  2.      In the event of a concussion, the skier will be medically evaluated.  As a part of this evaluation, follow-up cognitive testing will be completed.  The data from the follow-up cognitive testing will be used by the physician as the athlete is managed through the concussion.  Guidance for parents and coaches will be provided with regard to how to best help their child/athlete recover as quickly as possible from their concussion. 3.      In order to receive medical clearance for return to activity, an athlete must remain physically and cognitively symptom free upon exertion. For athletes under 18 years of age, recovery from a concussion is typically a minimum of 7-10 days. Each ski team will need to set up referrals to local physicians for follow-up in the event of a concussion and to determine when it is safe to go back to sport. The Far West Masters Scholarship Program is sponsoring baseline IMPACT testing for all Far West Juniors 11 years and older. They will provide, at no cost this year, baseline testing  to help guide doctor’s, parents, coaches and athletes in their return to skiing, training and any physical activity after a crash that results in a concussion.  At this point we have begun an awareness  program at Sugar Bowl and Squaw Valley along with Physician follow up and are baseline testing  athletes. All Far West programs are encouraged to have a point person contact Eddie Mozen 530-581-4523 or mozen@concentric.net to help set up an awareness program for their team and to access baseline Impact testing.  Far West Skiing would like to thank the Far West Master’s Scholarship Program  for taking a strong interest in the health and well being of all our ski racers.
